Chapter 1

The newspaper editor-in-chief was behind with the news. Nobody else had reported this shocking turn of events- it was probable that his rivals already had their best reporters on the street, eating up all of the credible sources.
“Hobson, I want you investigating the South side of town. You can do that, or get out. Morton, look around the next town. Look, I know it’s freezing out there, but if you don’t, I’ll fire you. Joe, I-“
Before he could finish, he collided with a Blaziken morph headed in his direction. Both toppled backwards, and the editor’s hand slapped into a coffee mug, which fell onto him. A sizzling sound was heard, and he jumped up to run the burn under a cold faucet. As he did so, he shouted back, “What in the blue blazes was that for?”
The Blaziken morph entered the room, also coated in coffee. “Well, that’s not particularly nice, Mr. Editor. I was coming to share a story of the past 2 years with you, but if you’re going to be this unfriendly, I could just leave…”
The editor turned to face the newcomer. Cripes, if he’d known that this Blaziken was blue…
“I’m terribly sorry about that,” he said after a moment. “You say that you have a story for me? How up-to-date is it?”
“It ends six hours ago.”
Gold. Simply Gold. There was no possible way he could pass this up.
“What’s your name, sir?”
“I am simply a numismatist. Credit me as an anonymous source.”
“A who?”
“A coin collector. But that’s beside the point. Do you want my story, or don’t you?”
“Oh, I want it, but why did you pick us?”
“I happen to know from your blog that you inherited a 1933 St. Gaudens Double Eagle* from your dead uncle. I will accept that as payment. If you try to negotiate, I will go with my first choice of newspaper, and sell this story to the Petersburg Gazette.”
Dang, if this Blaziken didn’t know how to play…
“All right. You will have your Double Eagle. I will set you up with our best reporter. Don’t skimp on any details.”
+ + +
The reporter, a tall female Primeape morph, sat with her pencil at the ready. “Alright, sir. Let’s get this interview started.”
The Blaziken took a deep breath, and began his story.
“I suppose this story doesn’t really begin two years ago. I suppose it really begins sixty years ago. A war had raged across the entire world for half a century. Then, they dropped the bombs. Nukes rained from the sky, obliterating any and all life between the tropics- including legendary Pokémon. The fallout has still not ended. The nuclear energy changed what it did not kill, and reached North, fusing Human and Pokémon genetics. Within hours of the change, lethal weapons were banned, the climate shifted to a nuclear winter, and the Pokemorph race was officially declared the dominant race- indeed, the only race- in the North.
“We lost contact with the Southern half of the planet, due to some strange effect of the fallout, and settled into everyday life. However, two years ago, a young adventuring team discovered something new- something that would rock our world to its foundations, and change life in the North forever…”
+ + +
Selene, Walt, and Meadow stepped out of the cold, and into a bar.
Selene was a Lucario morph, who was tall for her age of 15, standing 5’ 4’’. Her fur patterns were almost correct for a Lucario, except for three irregularly-placed black stripes running horizontally across her midsection. Her pupils were also dilated, but this was due to the fact that she was coming out of her heat cycle.
Walt was an Absol morph, who was average-sized for a male of his age, standing 4’11’’. His coat was a minty-green color, and his face was as white as snow. He sported a backpack that seemed too large for him, but he wore it with no problems.
Meadow was perhaps the shortest person in the building. He was a Persian morph who stood at a mere 4’ 6’’. He had gray fur, with brown stripes on his neck and tail, an abnormality that he couldn't explain. By his waist, he sported a leather pack which he kept closed, and a slab of slate.
Selene shook some of the snow off of her fur, and strode over to a table. She spoke to the bartender. “I’ll have a cola, wedge of lemon, and no ice. My friend the Absol will have a Cherry Cola, and the Persian will tell you himself.”
Meadow strode forward, and pulled out his slate. He scratched out the sentence, A cola, please.
The bartender nodded, and went off to prepare the drinks
Walt and Meadow sat down, and Selene began the conversation that they had every two weeks.
“Alright, so I'm beginning to think that this adventuring group thing isn't working out.”
Meadow facepalmed, and Walt sighed.
Selene continued. “If you think about it, we've had two jobs in the past six months. I mean, they've paid decently enough, but the rent is reaching insane levels, and we're running out of cash. So, unless either of you guys have any ideas...”
Walt held up a hand to silence her. “We've been over this. We have enough money to last us another year, unless someone's been sneaking cash. We only need to advertise.”
“And who's going to pay for that?”
A scratching noise was heard, and Meadow held up his piece of slate. I'd be happy to chip in, if neither of you have a problem with it.
Selene sighed. “Thanks, Meadow, but unless we get another job soon, I'd leave anyway. It's getting dull just sitting around. Besides, our base has pretty much become a full boarding house that we're paying 2C a month for. If we end the team and get individual apartments, we'd save a total of 4PK a week!”
Walt eyed her. “I know it's not perfect, but you're outvoted 2 to 1. As long as Meadow and I want to continue, we'll keep going. If you wanted, you could leave, but we'd prefer that you not.”
Selena rolled her eyes. “Cut the crap, Walt. You guys would have fallen apart long ago if I wasn't here. Since his adoptive older sister died, Meadow hasn't been the same, and quite frankly, you suck at being an older brother figure.”
Walt couldn't deny this, so he sat back quietly, and sipped his drink. As he finished his sip, Meadow tapped his shoulder.
There's some noise coming from outside. Someone is dashing through the snow, and their footsteps don't sound like happy ones.
As Walt finished reading, a blue-feathered Blaziken morph pushed the door open. He was about 4’ 10’’, and he looked to be in his mid-forties. He marched over to the bar, and addressed the room.
“Is there anyone here who is affiliated with an adventuring team? I have a job for them.”

*An incredibly rare $20 coin- they were minted shortly after gold coins were removed from circulation. Before they could be melted down, 20 were stolen. One is currently available to collectors, nine have been melted down, and ten are locked up in Fort Knox.

This is an exception to double posting.

I thought that was great. It was better than anything I ever wrote. Something that I don't understand is the end there.
If 20 were stolen, how did 10 get in Fort Knox without being melted down? while 9 were melted down? And why is one available to collectors?

20 were stolen. 9 were reclaimed and melted down. The one that is available was auctioned off by its owner who was an important Egyptian politician. Therefore, it was legal to auction. The other 10 were then reclaimed and kept as national treasures.

Oh, you see, if you put it like that then it would make a little more sense.
